Focal Species

NestWatch accepts data on ALL North American breeding birds. However, we have a list of Focal Species which were chosen based on many factors including migratory status, nest type, range and tolerance to disturbance. These species were also selected because you are very likely to encounter them in your backyards and neighborhoods.

Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor)

Nesting habitat: Prefers open woodlands or farmlands near water.

Nest site: Natural cavity or woodpecker hole in tree, also in cavity or crevice in building or wooden structure, and nest-box, occasionally signposts, pipes, and holes in the ground. Height varies from 3-30 ft.

Nest type: A collection of dry grasses, pine needles, etc., in a cup lined with feathers. Built mostly by the female.

Clutch size: Usually 4-7 eggs.
Color: White
Egg size: Usually 18.7 mm x 13.2 mm.

Incubation period: 11-19 days.

Nestling period: Young brooded by female; fed by both. Fledge between 15-25 days.

Number of broods per season: 1, rarely 2.
