Focal Species

NestWatch accepts data on ALL North American breeding birds. However, we have a list of Focal Species which were chosen based on many factors including migratory status, nest type, range and tolerance to disturbance. These species were also selected because you are very likely to encounter them in your backyards and neighborhoods.

Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus)

Nesting habitat: Highly variable, including wetland, upland, and agricultural sites. Urban and suburban habitats are occasionally used. Nest site:

Nest site: Near or over water in vegetation such as grasses, trees, and cereal crops.

Nest type: Woven of sedges and grass, lined with fine grass and rushes. Built by female.

Eggs:
Clutch size: Usually 3, with a range of 2-4 eggs.
Color: Very pale blue, marked by dark colors.
Egg size: 23.0-25.3 mm x 17.0-17.9 mm

Incubation period: 11-13 days.

Nestling period: Young brooded by female. Fed by both parents. Fledge between 9-12 days.

Number of broods per season: 1, sometimes 2.
