Focal Species

NestWatch accepts data on ALL North American breeding birds. However, we have a list of Focal Species which were chosen based on many factors including migratory status, nest type, range and tolerance to disturbance. These species were also selected because you are very likely to encounter them in your backyards and neighborhoods.

Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis)

Nesting habitat: Open woodland or man-made sites around farms and buildings.

Nest site: Nest in a natural cavity, old woodpecker hole, or nest box on wooden post.

Nest type: Loose cup of grasses and pine needles built in a cavity. Lined with dry grasses, hair, or feathers. Built mainly by female.

Eggs:
Clutch size: Usually 4-5.
Color: Pale blue
Egg size: 18.1-24.3 mm x 14.7-19.2 mm

Incubation period: 11-19 days.

Nestling period: Young fed by both parents. Brooded by the female. Fledge between 17-19 days.

Number of broods per season: 2, sometimes 3, rarely 4 broods per season.
